Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, the ex-officio chair and president of the University of South Alabama Board of Trustees, temporarily chaired the board’s quarterly meeting today on the USA campus.

Although the state’s governor is board chair and president by virtue of the office they hold, board meetings are usually chaired by one of the trustees, chosen by the board. USA’s current chair pro tempore is Birmingham attorney Kenneth O. Simon.

“What you do on this campus is beneficial for the entire state,” Ivey said at the board meeting. “The University of South Alabama is producing impactful citizens, driving economic development and improving health care delivery. USA is critical to our state’s success.”

Following her remarks, the governor turned the meeting back over to Simon.

“The governor has a long and distinguished history as a champion for higher education in our state,” said Simon. “She and our trustees share an unwavering commitment to educating our citizens, and her input here today was welcomed and valuable.”

Ivey has attended and chaired board meetings at several of the state’s public colleges and universities since becoming governor earlier this year. Prior to today’s board meeting, she took a driving tour of the USA campus and also met with administration, student, faculty and alumni leaders.
