Hurricane Sets Louisiana Native on Path to Forecasting Career
As a University of South Alabama student, Carmen Hernandez has already had the experience of issuing weather warnings to private businesses who are clients of USA鈥檚 Coastal Weather Research Center.
鈥淣ot a lot of undergraduate programs let you have the ability to issue a warning like that,鈥 Hernandez said. 鈥淭hey do give us a lot of training first.鈥
Growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, she got hooked on weather because of 2005鈥檚 Hurricane Rita, one of the strongest hurricanes ever. 鈥淪eeing how much it could affect us, even as a tropical storm by the time it got up to us, just got me really interested,鈥 Hernandez said. 鈥淚 kept going from there, learning more about meteorology.鈥
She chose South鈥檚 meteorology program partly because she received in-state tuition rates through the Academic Common Market, an agreement among 15 Southern and mid-Atlantic states.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e able to have one-on-one contact with the professors, and if you want to do any research, it鈥檚 super easy to get involved.鈥
鈥淚 really love it here,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a small program, so you鈥檙e able to have one-on-one contact with the professors, and if you want to do any research, it鈥檚 super easy to get involved.鈥
She also has worked with the South Alabama Mesonet, a network of 26 automated weather stations along the Gulf Coast used by South professors and researchers and by outside organizations, including the National Weather Service.
Thanks to the Weather Service鈥檚 Pathways Program, she鈥檚 well on her way to her goal of becoming an NWS forecaster. 鈥淚 basically work full-time during the summer,鈥 Hernandez said of the internship program. 鈥淭hey have me help on a research project or shadow forecasters and basically learn how to do things at the office.鈥
She鈥檚 practically been doing the job for years already. 鈥淚 pretty much notice the weather whenever it鈥檚 happening. So if I鈥檓 with friends or family, I鈥檒l tell them about it and try to explain why it鈥檚 happening.鈥
